Set in City Hall Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, this view shows the building that has housed New York's municipal government since it was completed in 1812. Its Federal-style design, by Joseph-François Mangin and John McComb Jr., reflects the restrained classicism of the early republic and still stands out among the towers that later crowded lower Manhattan. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative around 1905 as part of its large catalog of American scenes, which was sold to travelers and publishers. The plate offers a record of how the civic landmark looked just as the city was growing rapidly around it.
