Three large office towers share this view of lower Manhattan: the Singer Building, the City Investing Building and the Hudson Terminal Buildings, all rising in the dense blocks near Broadway and Liberty Street. The Singer Building, completed in 1908 for the sewing machine company, briefly held the title of world's tallest building, while the Hudson Terminal complex was built to serve commuters arriving by tunnel from New Jersey. The picture was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm whose photographs of American cities and landscapes circulated widely in the early 1900s.
