Three of the great early downtown towers share this view: the Singer Building, the City Investing Building, and the Hudson Terminal complex, which rose above a railroad station at the edge of the financial district. The Singer Building, designed by Ernest Flagg and completed in 1908, was for a time among the tallest structures in the world, while the Hudson Terminal was tied to the Hudson and Manhattan tunnels that linked lower Manhattan to New Jersey. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its color and black-and-white views of American cities, made the glass negatives around the turn of the twentieth century, when Manhattan's skyline was changing quickly.
