The Singer Building, with its slender tower, stands out among the Lower Manhattan views in this group. Completed in 1908 as headquarters for the Singer Manufacturing Company, it was for a short time the tallest building in the world. Nearby, the Hudson Terminal buildings rose above the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad station, a transit hub that linked Manhattan with New Jersey and tied these commercial towers to the city's rail network. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made these glass plate negatives, documented such skyscrapers and rail hubs for its commercial catalog during the early 1900s.
