Few towers of its era rose as high as the Singer Building, which the Singer Sewing Machine Company completed in 1908 on lower Broadway near Liberty Street. Architect Ernest Flagg gave it a slender, tapering shaft, and for a brief stretch it held the title of world's tallest building. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its color and black-and-white views of American cities, recorded it on two nearly identical glass plate negatives, so the pair shows how a photographer might have framed the same tower from slightly different positions.
