Few buildings in New York have a shape as recognizable as the Flatiron Building, which rises on a narrow triangular site where Broadway meets Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street. Designed by Daniel Burnham and completed in 1902, its steel frame and sharp prow made it one of the city's most talked-about towers when it opened. This large glass negative, made in 1903 by the Detroit Publishing Company, records the building and the busy street below in its earliest years. The company's big-plate views of American cities were prized for their fine detail, and the wide frame shows how the tower commanded its intersection.
