This view turns the camera on the Flatiron Building at the point where Broadway and Fifth Avenue meet at 23rd Street, its wedge-shaped prow sharp against the snowy street. Daniel Burnham's steel-framed tower had been completed in 1902 and was among the city's first skyscrapers, so its odd triangular footprint drew crowds of onlookers and photographers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large 8 x 10 inch glass negative around 1905, sold views of American cities and landmarks, and its record of Manhattan's newest towers in winter weather shows how the district looked just after the turn of the century.
