The Flatiron Building, named for its triangular footprint at the junction of Broadway, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street, was among the first steel-framed skyscrapers to stand out so sharply against the Manhattan skyline. Designed by Daniel Burnham and completed in 1902, it rises twenty stories above a wedge-shaped lot that forced the architect to narrow the building to a sharp prow. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American cities for commercial sale in the early 1900s. The plate captures the street scene around the building as it looked in its first years, when its novelty drew crowds and the surrounding avenue was still mixed with horse-drawn traffic.
