The Flatiron Building, designed by Daniel Burnham and completed in 1902, stands at the point where Broadway meets Fifth Avenue, and its wedge-shaped footprint is what makes this view memorable. This glass-plate negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1902 and 1910, shows the tower rising above the intersection with the Fifth Avenue Hotel visible at right. The company was known for its large-format views of American cities, and its images capture New York as the skyscraper era was just taking shape.
