The Flatiron Building, the wedge-shaped tower at the point where Broadway meets Fifth Avenue and East 23rd Street, is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative. The building was completed in 1902 on a triangular lot created by the crossing of the two avenues, and its narrow prow made it one of the most recognizable structures in the city. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its commercial views of American cities and landscapes, the negative captures the building as the early twentieth century's new steel-frame skyscrapers were reshaping Manhattan's skyline.
