The lettering "Shanley" and the street numbers 1493 and 1505 on the building set this view apart as a record of one particular commercial building in New York. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative between 1890 and 1910, and the firm built a large body of city and commercial views that later became known for its color prints. A "Design #116" notation on the negative hints at how the company organized its work, and the plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Its subject makes it a useful document of how business buildings presented themselves to the street in that era.
