The record names the Drexel Building, the Wall Street block whose firm, Drexel & Co. of Philadelphia, later became Drexel, Morgan & Co. through its partnership with J.P. Morgan, so the two names point to the same headquarters. This glass-plate negative dates to about 1905, when lower Manhattan was the center of American banking and its office towers were rising above the narrow streets. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the negative, photographed American cities and landmarks for sale to travelers and publishers in these years. The image is a useful record of how the financial district looked before the 1920s.
