The Flatiron Building, standing at the wedge-shaped intersection where Broadway meets Fifth Avenue and East 23rd Street, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Manhattan. Designed by Daniel Burnham and completed in 1902, its triangular limestone-and-steel tower rises about 285 feet and was among the first skyscrapers in the city to draw wide public attention. Its unusual shape, dictated by the angled lot, led to nicknames such as "Burnham's Folly," and the sharp point of the building was said to create strong gusts of wind on the street below. The structure remains a touchstone for early twentieth-century New York architecture.
