The Appellate Court Building stood beside Madison Square, at Madison Avenue and East 25th Street, where the state's appeals court for the First Department heard cases. Architect James Brown Lord designed the Beaux-Arts courthouse, which was completed around 1900 as New York was building some of its most formal public structures. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country in these years, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative records the building in its early decade of use, when the surrounding square was still lined with hotels and clubs.
