Passersby crowd the sidewalk to look in at the working presses of the New York Herald, a sight that drew onlookers to the paper's Herald Square building in the early 1900s. Newspapers of this period ran their presses in full view of the street, and the spectacle of rolling type and fast-moving paper made the building a stop for pedestrians as well as readers. The Herald was then one of the city's leading dailies, and the scene shows how closely the business of printing the news was tied to daily life on Broadway. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative, documented many American cities and streetscapes in this period.
