The view centers on the Herald Building at Herald Square, where Broadway and Sixth Avenue meet at 34th Street, and the record notes elevated railroads and a plaza in the scene. The building housed the New York Herald, one of the city's major daily newspapers, and its presence helped give the junction the name it still carries. Around 1903, the elevated lines were a defining feature of Manhattan streets, carrying crowds past newspaper offices, theaters and department stores. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, produced many such views of American cities in the early twentieth century.
