Few buildings announced the arrival of the modern skyscraper as plainly as the Metropolitan Life tower at Madison Square. Completed in 1909, the insurance company's headquarters took its campanile form from the bell tower of St. Mark's in Venice and held the title of world's tallest building for a few years. This Detroit Publishing Company view, made on a large glass-plate negative between 1900 and 1915, shows the tower rising beside the open greenery of the park, a pairing that captured the city's new vertical ambitions.
