The New York Life Insurance Building at Madison Avenue and 26th Street is set apart by its stepped tower, which rises to a gilded pyramid that catches light above the surrounding blocks. Architect Cass Gilbert designed the headquarters in a Renaissance-inspired style, and it was completed around 1928, when new office towers were reshaping the Manhattan skyline. This photoprint by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer known for city views, records the building in its early years, when the tower was a fresh landmark in the Madison Square area.
