Rising above Madison Square, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Building was finished in 1909 and, at 700 feet, briefly held the title of world's tallest building until the Woolworth Building surpassed it in 1913. Its clock tower was modeled on the Campanile of St. Mark's in Venice, and the park beside it was a busy gathering spot in the city's core. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century.
