Few buildings in the city were as striking after dark as the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower, whose lit upper stories rise above Madison Square in this view. Completed in 1909, the tower was modeled on the campanile of St. Mark's in Venice, and it held the title of world's tallest building until the Woolworth Building opened in 1913. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass plate negative sometime between 1908 and 1920, produced and sold views of American cities and landmarks, and its night scenes like this one show how electric lighting was changing the skyline.
