Carved jade and other Chinese works were displayed in a dedicated room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and this glass negative records how that space looked in the years between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large-format views of American cities, landmarks and institutions during that decade, produced the image. Its 8 by 10 inch format gives the rows of cases and the careful, even lighting that museum interiors of the period were known for. Photographs like this one show how early twentieth-century museums presented decorative arts as objects of quiet contemplation.
