The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue was still becoming the major public institution it is today when this view was made. The museum had moved into its first permanent building beside Central Park in 1880, and its facade and wings were expanded over the following decades. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large glass-plate negatives like this one for travel views and promotional prints, photographed many American cities in these years. The picture therefore records a moment when New York's cultural institutions were taking shape along the avenue.
