Inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue, this gallery was given over to sculpture, letting visitors in the early 1900s study large figures without traveling to Europe. At that time the museum's sculpture displays relied heavily on plaster casts of classical and Renaissance works, which many American museums collected so students and the public could see famous statues up close. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities and landmarks for sale, recorded the scene on an 8-by-10-inch glass negative made between 1902 and 1910.
