The Fifth Avenue site of the New York Public Library, recorded here while the building was still going up, was among the most closely watched construction projects in the city. The design by the firm Carrère and Hastings, with its marble facade and broad front steps, was meant to serve as the central library, and it did not open until 1911. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of American cities and landscapes, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative around 1907, so the picture captures the site in the middle of its transformation.
