The New York Public Library's main building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street was still new when this pair of 8 by 10 inch glass negatives was made. Its Beaux-Arts design by Carrère and Hastings opened to the public in 1911 and quickly became one of the city's proudest civic landmarks. The two plates are close variants of the same view, and one is marked as a duplicate, which suggests the company wanted a spare copy of a scene it considered worth keeping. The Detroit Publishing Company made many large-format views of American cities in these years.
