Few rooms in Manhattan are tied to the Revolution as directly as the one in this glass negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company titled the spinning room at Washington's headquarters, the Morris-Jumel mansion. The house stands on a rise in Harlem Heights, and Washington used it as his base in September 1776, as American forces fought nearby and then withdrew. The catalog also tags the view with spinning apparatus, a reminder of the household textile work that filled colonial homes. The company's photographers traveled widely in the early 1900s, and this 8-by-10-inch plate, dated roughly 1905 to 1915, records the interior as it appeared during that period.
