Few rooms in Manhattan have a more direct link to the Revolution than this bedroom at the Morris-Jumel Mansion in Harlem, where George Washington stayed during the fall of 1776 while his army defended New York. The house, built in the 1760s for the Loyalist Roger Morris, stood on high ground above the Harlem River and was one of the largest estates on the island. This glass-plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1900 and 1915, when the firm was photographing American landmarks and scenes across the country.
