The Roger Morris House, a Georgian mansion built in 1765 on high ground above the Harlem River, carries more Revolutionary-era history than most Manhattan houses. Its builder, Roger Morris, was a British officer who sided with the Crown, and in 1776 George Washington used the house as his headquarters before the army withdrew from the island. Later owners included the French-born merchant Stephen Jumel and his wife, Eliza, and the house is now known as the Morris-Jumel Mansion. This Detroit Publishing Company glass negative, made between 1900 and 1910, shows the building as the surrounding Harlem and Washington Heights neighborhoods were changing around it.
