Few stretches of the Genesee River are as dramatic as the high banks at Mount Morris, where the water has cut deep into layers of rock and left steep walls rising sharply above the current. The spot lies in what is now Letchworth State Park, a preserve that earned the gorge its nickname, the Grand Canyon of Western New York. The negative is one of many the Detroit Publishing Company made in the early 1900s, when its photographers traveled the country recording scenic places for railroads and travel publishers. It shows the valley much as tourists of that era would have seen it.
