Pound Island sits in the Thousand Islands stretch of the St. Lawrence River, where the river's current threads among hundreds of rocky islets along the New York shore. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made between 1890 and 1910, when the region drew steady numbers of summer visitors by steamboat and rail to its resort hotels and cottages. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced and sold views of American scenery and travel destinations during these decades, made the plate. Its record notes that the negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
