Taken from the ledge where the Catskill Mountain House stood, this view opens over the Hudson River valley and is built from four glass negatives joined into one panorama. The hotel, opened in 1824 on South Mountain, drew visitors for generations, and painters of the Hudson River School, Thomas Cole among them, helped make this vista a national emblem of American landscape. The Detroit Publishing Company, a large commercial photography firm of the early twentieth century, produced views like this for travelers who wanted to see the scenery for themselves.
