Spuyten Duyvil is the narrow waterway at the northern tip of Manhattan, where the Hudson meets the Harlem River, and this panorama captures that meeting point as a wide, two-part view. The name comes from Dutch colonial times, and Washington Irving made it familiar with a playful legend in his satirical history of New York. The photograph was made around 1890 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American landscapes and cities and drew on the earlier work of photographer William Henry Jackson, whose firm held the original copyright. Its second title, "First view of the Hudson," reflects how the river was often introduced to travelers arriving from the north.
