Two glass negatives, joined into a single panorama, capture The Narrows near Peekskill, where the Hudson River squeezes between steep wooded bluffs at the upper edge of the Hudson Highlands. The New York Central Railroad commissioned the views around 1890 to show travelers the river scenery along its line, and W.H. Jackson & Co. made them. The firm's negatives later passed into the Detroit Publishing Company collection, which sold such scenic views widely. The wide format shows how the railroad marketed the river as a landscape worth a long look from the train window.
