From the ledge at the Catskill Mountain House, this view looks east across the Hudson River valley, with the river and distant hills stretching toward the horizon. The hotel, opened in 1824 on the edge of the Catskill escarpment, drew artists and vacationers who came to see this overlook, and it became one of the best-known resorts in the region. The Detroit Publishing Company made many such views of American scenery in the early 1900s, and this one was made from six glass negatives, four of which form a single panorama. Its scale and careful composition show why the Catskill overlook was so often painted and photographed.
