Among the many views of the harbor in this Detroit Publishing Company group, this glass negative stands out for its focus on the Statue of Liberty and the small island it occupies, then called Bedloe's Island (renamed Liberty Island in 1956). The statue, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this one to travelers and publishers, so the picture captures how the monument was presented to visitors in the early twentieth century.
