Four sailors stand in the foreground of this wood engraving, while a launch carrying President Grover Cleveland moves through a fleet of assembled vessels toward Bedloe's Island, with the Statue of Liberty rising in the background. The scene captures the dedication of October 28, 1886, when Cleveland accepted the monument on behalf of the nation. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, and France gave it to the United States as a gift of friendship. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper published the engraving in its November 6, 1886 issue.
