Few monuments in New York Harbor are as recognizable as Bartholdi's colossal figure on Bedloe's Island, which this caption describes as a gift from the French people to Americans. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the copper statue, and Gustave Eiffel's firm engineered its iron framework. It was dedicated in 1886 as a symbol of friendship between the two republics. This card is a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. It was copyrighted by William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who produced many such views of American landmarks.
