Castle Garden, the old circular fort at the tip of Manhattan, is the subject here, with Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty shown in the harbor beyond it. Andrew Melrose painted the scene, and Raphael Tuck & Sons, with offices in London and New York, issued it as a chromolithograph around 1887, the year after the statue was dedicated on Bedloe's Island in 1886. By then Castle Garden had served as the city's main immigrant landing depot for more than 30 years, a role it held until 1890, when Ellis Island took over.
