Few statues in the country were photographed as often as the figure on Bedloe's Island, and this 1890 print shows her with the title "enlightening the world" as she looked in New York Harbor, about four years after her dedication in 1886. The copyright line credits S.R. Stoddard, the upstate New York photographer known for his views of the Adirondacks and his stereographs. Stoddard's commercial work helped spread images of the statue, a gift from France, to Americans who had never seen the harbor. The print is a useful record of how the monument was presented to the public in its early years.
