Published around 1885, this chromolithograph presents the Statue of Liberty before it ever rose over New York Harbor, billing Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's colossal figure as the gift of France to the American people. The statue was built in France and not dedicated on Bedloe's Island until October 1886, so the print captures a moment when the monument was still a promise. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for bright color views of American life, turned the project into a patriotic image for a popular market.
