Few early images of the Statue of Liberty were printed while the monument was still a plan, and this color lithograph, dated around 1884, is one of them. Titled "The Gift of France to the American People," it presents Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's colossal figure as a gift between two republics, which is how the project was promoted before the statue reached New York. The Shugg Lithographoid Printing Co. produced it from a design by R. Schwarz, and the picture works as advertising for an unfinished project. Its subject headings also list state seals, a reminder that 1880s printers often borrowed official symbolism to lend weight to a commercial image.
