From the southern tip of Welfare Island, now Roosevelt Island, this 1955 view places the United Nations headquarters across the East River with the mid-Manhattan skyline behind it. The U.N. gardens appear at right. The complex, built on land donated by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and opened in 1952, had become a symbol of postwar diplomacy by the time this photograph was made. Issued by the U.N. itself, the print shows how the organization chose to present its home to the public.
