Here the city appears at night under the sweep of a Sperry searchlight, with the Manhattan skyline rising above the East River. The Sperry name points to the inventor Elmer Sperry, whose company built powerful searchlights for naval and commercial use in the years around World War I. Dated March 31, 1919, the print dates from the months just after the armistice, when night views of the city's towers attracted photographers experimenting with artificial light. The Library of Congress holds it as a copyright deposit, which is why the record preserves its original title and date.
