Dreamland, which opened on Coney Island in 1904, was among the most lavish amusement parks of its era, and this glass negative captures one of its water slides, a thrill ride that dropped riders down a steep chute. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the view, specialized in large-format photographs of American cities, resorts and landscapes in the early 1900s. Fire swept through Dreamland in 1911, so this picture preserves a resort that lasted only a handful of years. Its 8-by-10-inch glass plate offers a sharp record of the park's mechanical attractions.
