The entrance to Steeplechase Park, with its giant grinning face, is the subject of this 1965 United Press International news photograph. George C. Tilyou opened the park on Surf Avenue in 1897, and its gateway became one of the most recognizable landmarks of Coney Island. The park closed in 1964 after nearly seven decades, so pictures like this one from the New York World-Telegram collection record the end of an era on the Brooklyn shore.
