This photograph shows a picnic area in Wildwood State Park, on the North Fork's neighboring north shore of Long Island, in 1936. Wildwood sits along Long Island Sound near Wading River, and its wooded grounds and shoreline made it a popular day-use destination for families from Suffolk County and New York City. In the 1930s, New York's state park system was expanding, and picnic grounds like this one were built to give urban and suburban visitors open-air space within reach of a day's drive. The image captures how such public recreation areas were used during the Depression years, when inexpensive outings close to home were especially common.
