Planting Fields, the estate of William Robertson Coe, sits in Oyster Bay on the North Shore of Long Island. Its Georgian Revival mansion, designed by architect John Russell Pope, was built for Coe and his wife, Mai Rogers Coe, in the years before the First World War. The grounds were laid out as a showplace of formal gardens, woodlands, and large conservatories, and they were later given to New York State, which now operates them as Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park. The photograph's caption card gives no date, so the view is best read as a record of the estate's landscape rather than of a specific day.
