Hounds gathered for the first meet of the season at the Meadowbrook Club on Long Island, a gathering of the fashionable hunt set that made the sport a social ritual for wealthy New Yorkers in the early 1900s. The Meadowbrook hunt, organized in the early 1880s, was among the best known in the country, and its country-estate setting stood in sharp contrast to the crowded city. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereographs in large numbers. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair of images would have given viewers a sense of depth and movement among the horses and riders.
