Looking past a pier toward yachts riding at anchor, this view shows the harbor at Oyster Bay on Long Island's North Shore, where the Long Island Yacht Club sat among the summer waterfront. In the early 1900s, the bay drew wealthy New Yorkers who spent summers there, and Theodore Roosevelt's home at nearby Sagamore Hill made the village widely known. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer better known for her portraits and documentary work, made the picture, and the date of 1905 comes from an unverified caption card.
