The launch in this photograph, crowded with ten people, is set at the Long Island Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, a North Shore harbor town that drew well-to-do New Yorkers for summer sailing and social life in the early 1900s. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most accomplished American photographers of her era, made the picture, which the original caption card dates to 1905. Gasoline-powered motor launches were a fairly new sight on American waterways then, so a boat loaded with a full party shows how quickly recreational motorboating was catching on among the leisure class.
